I like to be gone most of the time

On August 2008, I went to a different country for the first time in 15 years.

Where I lived

I stayed at Loyola Village during my half year in SF. You had to climb a gajillion stairs (the ones in the picture are only a tiny fraction of them) to reach the campus which is on the other side of the mountain. It’s the reason I didn’t get too fat, though there is a big difference on my appearance when I got to the US and when I left. Walking around the area is nice. There’s a spot at the top of the stairs where you can see the top of Golden Gate Bridge.

My flat

I am a big fan of polka dots. This was the first time I had Apple products and I fell in love. My other flatmates didn’t like Apple and yet they had iPods too. My roommate brought a small television with her where I watched Mad Men on Sunday nights. When we didn’t go out, we would stay on the couch and watch The Simpsons or MTV.

Treasure Island Music Festival

Treasure Island Music Festival was my first music festival ever. I saw Goldfrapp and CSS to name a few. But the coolest thing ever was meeting Jason Munn, one of my favourite designers ever. I even got to go to his studio which was awesome.

LoveFest

LoveFest '08

Lovefest is one of those things that is so San Francisco. People dress up in crazy outfits. And drugs are legal on this day!

People

I was lucky to have the best roomie ever - Renesha. She told us funny stories about her family, especially her grandmother. She gave excellent life advice that I still follow today. I also loved my other flatmates, Jenny and Jeongeun who were also a lot of fun.

I met other fellow Asian exchange students like me and we went on a trip to LA. Going to Korean restaurants was great because we always got free food.

I will never forget San Francisco’s friendliness because perfect strangers will stop to compliment you. They will let you join them if you are alone.

One of my favourite memories was going to the MOMA for free one Tuesday. I regret not going to the more hidden art exhibits.

SF Music Scene

The most fun I had was going to so many concerts. It was so cheap here! Unless they were sold out and you had to look for tickets from third party sites then it cost a fortune. My favourite was the Stars concert. Other bands I've seen include Death Cab for Cutie, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, of Montreal, We are Scientists, The Stills, Kings of Leon and The Killers. I took a picture with Matt Hales from Aqualung who was super nice!

I visited Stanford with a friend. Would love to study here someday at the d.school!

Food

Because I didn't know how to cook, I survived on microwave meals for the first few weeks. Then I got sick and decided to learn how to cook pasta. We ordered pizza all the time. My Korean flatmate sometimes cooked for us. I learned how to eat giant burgers but the best ones were from In-N-Out. I discovered that the best cookies were from Chestnut Bakery. One afternoon, I bought a hot fudge sundae from Ghirardelli and just walked around and took pictures.
